Women’s College World Series Viewership Growth

The 2026 Women’s College World Series (WCWS) which took place from May 28 to June 4, showed continued growth in the popularity of women’s sports and demonstrated the increasing media value of college softball. The championship series featured the University of Texas and Texas Tech University in a rematch of the 2025 national championship, where Texas once again won the title. While Texas successfully defended its championship, one of the biggest storylines was the strong television audience throughout the tournament.
The growth in WCWS viewership matters because it shows that people want to watch women’s sports and highlights the importance of mainstream media exposure. As networks continue investing in women’s sports programming, college softball is proving it can attract large audiences and create value.
Rising Ratings
The WCWS championship is played in a best-of-three series. Texas took Game 1 with a 7–3 win, meaning Texas Tech needed to win Game 2 to keep its championship hopes alive. However, Texas Tech was unable to extend the series, as Texas secured a 4–1 victory in Game 2 to defend its national title.
In addition to Texas repeating as national champions, the sport of softball saw major success in television ratings. Game 2 of the championship series drew the largest television audience in college softball history.
On ESPN, Game 2 averaged 2.5 million viewers and peaked at 3 million viewers. This is significant because it highlights growing audience interest in women’s sports. Throughout the WCWS, every game aired on a major platform, including ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC, showing the importance of mainstream media coverage in increasing the visibility of women’s sports.
