The Semi-finals matchups begin today! Check out this week’s hub for insight on the latest storylines, events, and information surrounding the final week of the World Cup.
World Cup Storylines to Watch
Based on the official rankings, the first semi-final matchup will feature No. 1-ranked France and No. 3-ranked Spain. The winner of this match will play the winner of Argentina vs. England in the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19. France is looking to reach its third consecutive World Cup final, while Spain will look to reach the final for the first time since 2010. On Wednesday, July 15, Argentina and England will face off in the second semi-final match. This will be Lionel Messi’s first time playing against England during his international career. The matchup will feature two of the world’s top teams and several star players. The winner of this match moves on to the final on Sunday, July 19. After the positive reviews from this year’s 48-team tournament, FIFA is considering expanding future World Cups to 64 teams. FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino, wants to expand further because he believes that, “Every nation should be able to dream of taking part in the World Cup.” Check out Matt Reed’s article for more details!
