The Round of 32 has already begun and will conclude on Friday, July 3rd. This weekly hub will provide you with insight on storylines, events, and information across the three hosting cities.
World Cup Storylines to Watch
Paraguay upset Germany in the Round of 32. The match finished 1–1, with Paraguay advancing after winning the penalty shootout. Germany became the first top contender to lose in the Round of 32. Paraguay was ranked 34th out of 48 teams to begin the tournament. Check out ESPN’s article for more on how the match played out. It will be interesting to see how far Paraguay can go!

With the tournament now in the knockout stage, every game carries higher stakes because one loss can end a team’s run. To keep their World Cup hopes alive, teams like Portugal, Spain, Mexico, and England will have to win tough matchups. Portugal faces Croatia in the Round of 32, and if No. 8-ranked Portugal wins, it could then face No. 3-ranked Spain in the Round of 16. If No. 9-ranked Mexico and No. 4-ranked England both win their Round of 32 matches, they will face each other in the Round of 16. Check out Tim Reynolds’ article for more information on each Round of 32 matchup.

In the Group Stage, Canada finished second, allowing them to advance to the Round of 32. Canada then played South Africa on June 28th, where they won 1-0 with a last minute, stoppage time goal. Check out BBC Sports’ article for more on Canada’s World Cup story. Not only is this Canada’s first time hosting the World Cup, it is also their first time making it to the Round of 16. It will be interesting to see if they can keep advancing!
